Pottenstein is a town in the district of Bayreuth, in Bavaria. During WWII a subcamp of Flossenburg concentration camp was located here. It has an altitude of 350-614 m. It is surrounded by high cliffs overlooking the city and is considered a nationally acclaimed climatic health resort. Many recreational activities are offered, pedal boats at Schoegrund Lake, summer bob slide, Putt Putt Golf, Tennis, and Devils Cave with its' stalactite and stalagmite caverns. There is also a 1000 year old castle and a statue of Saint Elisabeth, widow of Ludwig IV, Langrave of Thuringa. The legend that, while being threatened and held hostage between 1228-1229, the eggs and lard she had in her carrying basket were tranformed into beautiful roses--now called the "Miracle of the Roses."
When a colleague of my husbands' heard we were heading for Meissen and Dresden this past weekend, he recommended we stop by Pottenstein, a favorite motorcycle route for many of the locals. I'm so glad we did as we found it to be charming, unique, and very picturesque with its narrow valley, small running stream, high cliffs, and assortment of outdoor summer activities.
