HODGEPODGE WEDNESDAY

It is Wednesday again and time for another Hodgepodge.....

1. March 2nd is Dr. Seuss's birthday so I'm wondering...do you like green eggs and ham? Okay-how about this...how do you like your eggs? Or don't you?

I love my eggs basted.  I went to a lecture on nutrition and learned that it is a myth that eggs contain too much cholesterol.  All of these years I have been avoiding them.  They are nature's perfect protein.  Bring 'em on!

2. Is March coming in like a lion or something less ferocious where you live?

Nuff said.

3. Do you work better or worse under pressure.

Just thinking about deadlines give me the hebbie jebbies.  I have worked for 30 years with nothing but deadlines, schedules, and pressure.  Now that I am retired, I make my own schedules according to my time clock and I avoid activities that remind me of work.  I figure I've earned this and I'm going to enjoy it.

4. March Madness-are you a fan? It's college basketball in case you're wondering. And if you're outside the USA tell us, is there any sort of 'madness' taking place during March in your part of the world?

F C Fussball, or better known in the U.S. as soccer.  We like the World Cup Soccer games, but living in Munich, we are now Bayern München fans.

5. Under what circumstances do you do your best thinking?

Invariably, it will be when I am trying to fall asleep or mid-sleep.  I have lost count of the number of times I have jumped out of bed to jot down an idea I've had during the wee hours of the morning.

6. What item of clothing from your wardrobe do you wear most often?

7. Do you use sarcasm?

I save it for very special people.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Best wishes for a Baba Marta!

This photo was sent to me by a friend of mine from Sophia, Bulgaria.  She and I had our photos taken in Sophia under a tree filled with "Martenici.  Bulgarians put these home made decorations of white and red yarn on budding or blooming trees the first time an individual sees a stork, a swallow or a budding tree.  The holiday is called Baba Marta.. "Baba" (баба) is the Bulgarian word for "grandmother" and Mart (март) is the Bulgarian word for the month of March. Baba Marta is a Bulgarian tradition related to welcoming the upcoming spring. The month of March, according to Bulgarian folklore, marks the beginning of springtime. Therefore, the first day of March is a traditional holiday associated with sending off winter and welcoming spring.

I have never heard of basted eggs before...how are they cooked, exactly? I find that very intriguing! I really love that tradition you shared!

April, basted eggs are fried eggs that are fried with the lid on and the steam cooks the top of the egg. A sunnyside egg is cooked from the bottom only. Try it!

I love eggs, but I've never had a basted egg or even heard of it before. Thanks for the explanation, I'll have to try that. Now see, I've learned something new today. Love it when that happens.

Happy Baba Marta

I've learned several things from your blog today--how to baste and egg, and about Baba Marta!

I LOVE being retired--no stress, and I wish I didn't do most of my thinking at night when I should be sleeping! We have some things in common :)

I agree with you, eggs are nature's perfect protein! They certainly get a bad rap.
I like your new pictures, darling children.

I think I would like eggs cooked that way. I do like my egg yolk a little runny. That picture of the bed makes me a little sleepy...just the lighting and the pillows...ahhhh

I enjoyed reading your answers.
Cardiologist told hubby to stay away from eggs but we both love them. Since Hubby has had two heart attacks and a five vessel bypass..we eat them only as a treat. i would love to try basted eggs!

I love the tradition of welcoming spring!

Very interesting...I'll have to try basting an egg...the only basting I've ever done is with a sewing machine...the very thought made me chuckle. I enjoy the pictures in your new header!

I am a huge fan of soccer! My daughter has played for most of her life and is attending college on a soccer scholarship. Last summer was amazing, was it not?

Loved all of your answers and will admit that I am a wee bit jealous of your retirement. That will be me one day...in about 25 years. I am a late bloomer.

Have a great evening!

So many have never heard of basted eggs that I looked up the recipe.
To baste an egg, first heat a non-stick pan to around Medium. Then add a bit a butter or similar cooking substance (oil doesn't work as well for basted). Make sure the butter isn't burning off, you want all the moisture from the butter you can get. Then once the pan is coated with butter, add the egg(s). Spoon the hot butter from the pan over top of the eggs until the white's firm but the yellow runny. People say basted eggs are the most flavorful, but who knows/cares. Basted's just a really awesome texture for the eggs, like having a poached-fried egg. Enjoy! It's my favorite kind of eggs.

I use olive oil instead of butter and rather than spooning hot olive oil on the egg, I put a lid on it for a minute and check to see when the white's firm and the yellow still runny. I have to have something to dunk my toast in, :-D

My son loves what we call abracadabra eggs--toast with a hole, buttered and then the egg is put in the hole in the frying pan. He has to be there when it is turned to say abracadabra so it will turn well--without breaking the yolk. He then gets the bread toasted and right there with his egg to dip. I think trying your way might be fun.

Oh I love Baba Marta! I will have to do something like that here to make me celebrate when we eventually have a little bit of spring!
I also love eggs. When myu cholesterol went up I quit eggs. What happened? It went higher. I cut down on fats, then I went back to eating them, and guess what? My level went down! Go figure!
